MED13L Syndrome: The impact on speech development

Speech challenges are one of the most significant hurdles for individuals with MED13L. Many experience severe motor impairments that make communication difficult. By focusing on speech development, we aim to raise awareness, share effective tools, and support families—so that every voice has the chance to be heard.

The Power of Yet

With the right support, persistence, and understanding, children with apraxia related to MED13L syndrome can make meaningful progress. Every sound, every sign, every attempt is a step forward. “Yet” reminds us that communication is a journey—and with the right tools and community behind them, that journey can lead to incredible breakthroughs.

Connecting with the Community

August 2025, The MED13L Foundation Research & Family Meetup in Waltham, Massachusetts, Marissa Mitchell, MS, CCC-SLP and Dr. Cora Taylor conducted research and connected with the MED13L community.

Early Intervention is Key to Development

When speech development is delayed, early intervention provides critical windows of opportunity. The younger the child, the more their brain is primed for learning new speech patterns, building neural connections, and adapting motor planning for communication. Early support can shift a child’s developmental path and open doors to greater ability and connection.

Steps to Take

Request a formal referral to a speech‑language pathologist (SLP), especially one experienced in apraxia, if delays are suspected.

Use directories such as the American Speech‑Language‑Hearing Association (ASHA) Find a Professional tool (https://www.asha.org) to locate a speech-language pathologist in your area with expertise in apraxia.

Share your child’s speech goals, strategies, and accommodations with teachers, therapists, and caregivers to ensure consistency across settings.

Speak out loud during everyday interactions — describe what you’re doing, seeing, or touching. Narration supports language exposure, vocabulary building, and helps the brain connect words with actions.
